Choosing a headstone can feel overwhelming—especially if you’ve never done it before. At Choate Monument Company, we understand how hard this time can be. Since 1978, our family has helped thousands of families through this process with care and respect.
Here’s a simple guide to help you know what to expect.
Step 1: What to Know Before You Visit
Before you stop by, it helps to have a few things ready:
Your Ideas: Think about what you might want on the headstone—like the person’s name, dates, a short message, or a symbol.
Cemetery Info: Know the name of the cemetery and any rules they may have about headstone size, shape, or materials.
Your Budget: Have an idea of how much you’d like to spend. We’ll help you find the best option for your price range.
Don’t worry if you’re unsure. We’re here to help every step of the way.
Step 2: What We’ll Help You Decide
When you come in, we’ll walk through everything together:
Design: We’ll help you choose a look—simple or more personal—that honors your loved one.
Material: Granite is strong and comes in different colors. We’ll show you the choices and explain what works best.
Wording: Whether it’s just names and dates or something more special, we’ll help you find the right words.
We want the memorial to reflect your loved one’s life and story.

Step 3: What Happens After You Place Your Order
Once you've made your choices:
Design Proofs: We’ll create full-color drawings of the headstone. You’ll be able to look them over and make changes until it feels just right.
Production Time: Most gray granite headstones made in the U.S. take 4 to 6 months. Special shapes or imported granite may take up to 12 months.
Installation: We’ll work with the cemetery to make sure the headstone is placed correctly and meets all their rules.
We’ll keep you updated and make sure you feel informed the whole time.
